Hi guys. Welcome to Nursing.org. My name is Caroline Porter Thomas and I’m from the YouTube channel EmpoweRN. I’ve teamed up with nursing.org to bring you this five part series of the Do’s and Don’ts of Nursing School. In this video we are going to go over the first step, and there will be four videos that will follow this.

So the first step is to take responsibility for your education.

Do not rely on your nursing school to teach you everything you need to know to pass the NCLEX. Unfortunately, the way this system is, and since we have a board exam, it’s really impossible for nursing professors and there programs to basically teach you everything you need to know. And since there’s a board exam at stake, which can randomly test you on any question in any topic at any time, it’s really a hard feat to know which area they need to focus on more for you.

So, when I was in nursing school, I realized what a challenge my professors went through with so much content and so little time. We did not really have any extra time for extracurricular activities. It was basically a full, full– days in, days out of studying. And there’s just really no extra time for anything. And even doing that, it was difficult to know everything that we needed to know to pass the NCLEX. It was a lot of self-study.

With that said, when I became a nurse, I realized that there was even a lot more that I needed to know. I hardly knew anything. I only knew how to pass the NCLEX and not really anything else. So this is a profession that comes with a lot of challenges, but trust me, it’s worth it. So that’s my tip for today. I really hope that you enjoyed it.

So stay focused, stay driven, and come back to nursing.org all the time, especially for the next video. See you guys in the next video. Bye.
